Portal Road approaching Jasper House (view W) |
Overview
The Jasper Feeders are a gift from the landowner to birders of the world. Open hours are sunrise to sunset.
From Portal Town, drive west on Portal Road for 0.2 miles to the first house on the left (1261 W Portal Rd, Portal, AZ 85632). Pull into the driveway towards the house. The white building near the road is a power company facility, and apparently, they get annoyed when birders park in front of their building. I heard something about not blocking access to their lunch-time beer cooler, but I don't know.
Park in the driveway and walk through the public gate on the left (east) side of the house. Chairs and a table are arranged under the shady trees for birders. |

The feeders are good for lots of desert species. The view is to the south, so for photographers, visit in the morning or evening because the midday sun back-lights the feeders.
Mr. Jasper provides water, seeds, suet, jelly, nectar, and peanut butter. Don't overlook the donations jar. Your $5 donation offsets the cost of feeding the birds.
Look for all sorts of birds, including Gambel's Quail, Inca Dove, White-winged Dove, Broad-Billed Hummingbird, Black-chinned Hummingbird, Magnificent Hummingbird, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Curve-billed Thrasher, Canyon Towhee, Rufous-crowned Sparrow, Rufous-winged Sparrow, Green-tailed Towhee, Northern Cardinal, Bullocks Oriole, Scott's Oriole, Cassin's Finch, and House Finch. Also watch for Harris' Antelope Squirrel.
