Overview
Sunny Flat Campground is a well-maintained Forest Service campground near the confluence of Cave Creek and the South Fork of Cave Creek. The road through the campground is paved, as are the parking stalls, making this a clean and quiet campground (no footsteps in the gravel). The campsites have shade trees or shade structures, and drinking water is available at the restrooms (vault toilets). All sites have tables, fire pits, and food storage lockers (bear lockers). There are no hook-ups.
Campers bring hummingbird feeders, making this an excellent site to see hummingbirds close-up, and Arizona Woodpeckers and Acorn Woodpeckers nest in the campground trees. Elf Owls and Whiskered Screech-Owls call at night. Campers can walk out of the campground and up South Fork Road. Keep an eye out for bears (rare), Coatimundi, Mexican Fox Squirrels, several species of skunks, and lots of little bats.
