General Description: Sierra Fence Lizards (Sceloporus occidentalis taylori) are medium-sized, rough-scaled lizards. Males have dark blue patches on the sides of the belly, and the throat is blue. In females, the ventral surface is gray with little if any blue. The dorsal pattern on females is crossbars.
Taxonomy: Phrynosomatid Lizard Family (Phrynosomatidae).
Where to Find: Don't look for Sierra Fence Lizards around Las Vegas. Rather, look for them in open forests and rocky outcrops at middle and higher elevations in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California from Yosemite south of Sequoia National Park. |
