General Description: Regal Horned Lizards (Phrynosoma solare) are small to medium-sized (to 5 in.) lizards with broad, flattened bodies and a row of horns on the back of the head. This species has four large horns on the back of the head and three smaller horns on each side of the head (5 horns on each side), plus a single row of lateral fringe scales on each side of the body (some species have two rows). Coloration matches the soil and can lighten or darken. With a toad-like body form, these lizards are often called "horny toads."
Taxonomy: Phrynosomatid Lizard Family (Phrynosomatidae).
Where to Find: Don't look for Regal Horned Lizards around Las Vegas. Rather, look for them in southern Arizona, southwestern New Mexico, and south to northern Sinaloa, Mexico. |
