General Description: Northwestern Alligator Lizards (Elgaria coerulea principis) are medium-sized, tan lizards with dark brown speckling on the back and tail (not distinct crossbars). The dorsal scales are weakly keeled, and the neck is long. The eye is dark. A fold of skin separates the dorsal and ventral scales.
Taxonomy: Alligator Lizard Family (Anguidae).
Diet: Insects and other arthropods.
Habitat: Northwestern humid forests from sea level to about 11,000 feet.
Range: Northern Alligator Lizards (the species) occur in the Pacific states from central California to British Columbia, including most of Washington, northern Idaho, and northwestern Montana. This subspecies occurs from the northwest corner of California northward. |
