General Description: Band-tailed Pigeons (Patagioenas fasciata)
are large pigeons of the mountains. They have a broad, light-colored
band across the end of the tail, and a narrow, dark band above
that. They also have a white stripe across the back of the head and
a patch of iridescent greenish feathers on the back of the neck below the white stripe.
Taxonomy: Columbiformes, Columbidae.
Favored Habitat: Mountain areas.
Where to Find: Mt. Charleston area.
In Kyle Canyon, they used to roost in a dead tree adjacent to the public library (across the main road from the fire
station), but the tree was cut down in 2007. Check the tops of other tall dead trees in the area.
Comments: The "Band-tailed Pigeon Tree," which used to be in Kyle Canyon just across the street from the fire station, was designated a "hazard tree" and cut down.
If you were a tasty acorn or a little pine nut, this might be the last face you ever see!
