General Description: Whooping Cranes (Grus americana) are very large, long-legged, long-necked wading birds that fly with the neck stretched out. Adults are white overall except for a red crown and black face; juveniles are all brown.

Taxonomy: Gruiformes, Gruidae, Gruinae.

Favored Habitat: Shallow ponds, fresh marshes, salt marshes, and stubble fields.

Where to Find: Don't look for Whooping Cranes around Las Vegas. Rather, look for them along the Gulf Coast of Texas during winter or in the Canadian arctic during summer.
