General Description: American Flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber) are sexually monomorphic wading birds with long pink legs, long necks, striking pink-orange colors, and an oddly hooked bill.
Taxonomy: Phoenicopteriformes, Phoenicopteridae.
Favored Habitat: Large bodies of shallow, brackish water.
Where to Find: Don't look for American Flamingos around Las Vegas. Rather, look for them in south-most Florida, the Caribbean, the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico), the northern coast of South America, and the Galapagos Islands.
Comments: The orange color comes from their diet: small shrimp. |
