General: Desert-Holly Saltbush (Atriplex hymenelytra) is an upright, rounded shrub with
arrowhead-shaped, silvery-gray-green leaves. The plants are male and female, each with its own type of flower. Female plants put on reddish flower clusters and distinctive fruits that look like a stack of two coins. Male plants put on nondescript, greenish flowers.
Desert-Holly Saltbush plants are male and female, but the difference is only visible in the flowers ... and only the females produce fruits and seeds.
Desert-holly is a common component of shrub communities
on alkaline and saline soils at low elevations in the Upper Sonoran (Mojave
Desert Scrub) life zone. |
