General: San Felipe Dogweed (Adenophyllum porophylloides) is a subshrub with green stems that tend to grow upward. The leaves are small, green, and divided into three lobes, each lobe with notches. The shrub has reddish sunflower-type flowers without "petals" (flowers are rayless) and large glands on the phyllaries.
San Felipe Dogweed is an uncommon component of vegetation communities in dry, well-drained gravelly areas along washes and on lower bajadas into the lower mountains in the Lower Sonoran (Creosote-Bursage Flats) and Upper Sonoran (Mojave Desert Scrub) life zones.
Around Las Vegas, look for San Felipe Dogweed south of town and down in the California deserts and over into Arizona.
Family: Sunflower (Asteraceae). Also called Dyssodia porophylloides. |
